Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
(John 12v9 NIV)

It is possible that Lazarus had gone into hiding at some point.
Possibly to withdraw because of all the publicity.
This would also explain why people were travelling to see Lazarus as well as Jesus.

Perhaps it was felt Lazarus wasn’t safe.
Maybe all this attention was too much for Mary and Martha.
These were dangerous times for those who were seen as followers of Jesus.

People knew what the religious leaders were capable of.
Whatever the reason, large crowds started to appear.
This was building up into quite an event.

It could get out of hand.
There was an increased excitement and expectancy.
Something was about to happen, reaching a climax was being reached.

One that resulted in the crucifixion of Jesus.
The man who did no-one any harm.
The man least deserving of any punishment.

Signs, wonders and miracles are not for entertainment.
Your purpose in life is more than going to church every Sunday.
Jesus didn’t die for you to get your attendance at church.

What counts is the state of your heart.
Is Jesus at the centre of your life or a mutual acquaintance?
Are you following Jesus or you?
